Philly & Buffalo - what a combo!

Today we spent some time in downtown Philadelphia which is about 30 mins from where we are staying in a county region outside the city. Philadelphia city has around 1.5 million residents and the visitor websites promise much, but following such a wild time in NYC, expectations were a little low. We were very pleasantly surprised to find a bustling (but not overwhelmingly huge) city centre with lots of beautiful historic buildings mixed with new high-rises, shopping centres and hotels, all a fairly short walk from each other, with the lovely Fairmount Park (the largest landscaped urban park in the world) sitting on the edge of this.

Despite the sweltering 39 degree heat (which I have to confess we used as an excuse to stop for ice cream and soda every few blocks!) we liked it so much we plan to return tomorrow. Perhaps to visit the Franklin Institute and do a trolley or bus tour like true tourists. Maybe these pictures will wet your appetite and entice you to come to this part of the US sometime soon yourselves.

Cooling off in a fountain!
Discovered street art and sculptures around every bend including this plane with a greenhouse inside. Read about it here: http://www.newsworks.org/index.php/local//the-latest/28520-plane-greenhouse-sculpture-to-be-installed-in-center-city
Whilst walking around Philadelphia my eyes were peeled for a store called 'The Buffalo Exchange' - although not actually a thrift store (it's a clothing exchange, where clothing is purchased from the general public and sold through the store) the website stood out, so I hoped the store would too. Lo and behold it didn't take long for us to stumble upon it. Here's a few pics of what we found:

Loving the neon signs and back to that industrial look again.

Wall art pic - took this for my favourite quirky colleague with a bump!

Great branding, clear message and as ever trying to get men to part with their clothing proving a challenge here too!

These circular rails with a central platform work great for VM. Must try to source some once home...

Feeling a little jealous of the high ceilings I keep finding!
More from downtown tomorrow...good night.
